The most common system to designate U.S. naval aircraft covered the period 1923 to 1962. The letter J was used for Transport aircraft from 1928-1931, and for Utility from 1931-1946. The letter R was used for Racer from 1923-1928, while R desingated Transport from 1931-1962. In 1925 the U.S. Army adopted a new designation system for cargo/transport aircraft. Between 1919 and 1924, aircraft used a T- (Transport) designation and in 1925 the system was changed to C- (Cargo). Prior to World War II most of these cargo aircraft designs were built in very small numbers. |
The cargo naming scheme was reorganized in 1962, when the Army, Navy and Air Force systems were combined and simplified, providing a single system for the way each of the U.S. military services designated their aircraft. In the case of cargo aircraft, the USAF code C was retained, but the numbering sequence was started over. | ||||
